What are the Math Topics we will cover for the Aptitude Test?
You will re-learn Algebra and Math specific to pass the IBEW Aptitude Test.
You will learn how to:
• Find the Next number in a pattern of numbers such as 72, 64, 66, 58, 60, ...
• Determine the True statement. Consider the following formula: T = XYZ In the formula above, if Y remains constant and T increases, which of the following statements could be true? A. X increases and Z remains constant.
• Determine the True statement. Consider the following formula: N = 2M - 8 Which of the following statements is true for this formula? A. When the value of M is less than 4, N is negative.
• Solve Algebra equation plug-ins such as
• Solve order of operation PEMDAS problems such as
• Simplify such as 8x2y + 2x2y - 4x2y
• Equivalent such as Which formula is equivalent to the following.
• Solve Polynomials and be able to add, subtract, multiply (FOIL) such as (x + 5)(x - 2), and divide polynomials
• Factor a polynomial such as a2b3c4 - ab2c
• Solve Quadratic equations such as x2 - 9x + 14 = 0
• Solve Literal Equations such as Y = A/X
• Solve questions that ask -- Which choices represents the Same Relationship as as demonstrated in this table? Match the table to another table, graph, or equation such as y = x - 5
• Determine slope using Rise/Run given a graph, from two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2), and from a Table of (x, y) points
• Fractions, we will cover fractions so you are able to add, subtract, multiply, divide, simplify, and convert fractions to decimals.
• Solve Systems of Equations using elimination and substitution methods. (not all Union Locals test for Systems of Equations)
• We will also improve your general math skills including order of operations (PEMDAS), proportions, squares, square roots, and exponents.
Do I tutor for the GAN Aptitude Test?
Yes. I have helped men and women pass the GAN Aptitude Test to become IBEW apprentices.
If your IBEW Local is in Chicago, Los Angeles, Commerce, Boston, Detroit, Minneapolis, St. Paul, South Bend IN, and other Locals, your test topics are different than other Locals.
The study guide "Apprentice Aptitude Battery Test-Taking Tips" is created by a company called GAN Human Resources.
I will show you how to understand the following GAN test topics:
• Numerical Computation - solve problems with fractions and decimals.
• Numerical Reasoning - find the pattern in a series of numbers.
• Paper Folding - determine the hole pattern for paper folded and holes punched.
• Mechanical Reasoning - determine the movement of pulleys, gears, weights, and more.
• Reading Comprehension - identify the main idea and answer questions based on the stories.
My students tell me they did well because the type of questions they saw on the test were the same type we did during tutoring.

I had been out of HS math for more than 20 years. I had hired Matt as a math tutor for my IBEW aptitude test for about a dozen sessions. After working with him he had helped me pass the test that I was nervous about. He is very knowledgeable and patient. He explains math concepts and makes it extremely easy to understand. I highly recommend him if you need any math tutoring help.
I am interested in the electrical trades and needed to brush up on Algebra and other skills and Matt is just the right fit. Very knowledgable. While I've taken college algebra and passed for college credit, I haven't used these skills in a while. Great refresher course.

I just passed my IBEW aptitude test and scored 8 out of 9 thanks in large part to the work I did with Matt Yubas. He made the math understandable from basic concepts to the more complex algebra. Matt was a great help in preparing me for my GAN aptitude test. He was great at going piece by piece and walking through any problems that I needed help with in clear and easy to understand ways. Matt made sure to take note of anything I needed extra work with and also circled back to subjects I struggled with more. He also did his own research into where I was taking the test and how the test would be constructed in order to get as much as we could from our sessions. I tutor men and women full-time to pass the IBEW Electrician Aptitude Test and help Apprentices with math and circuits.
After a career in Electrical Engineering and corporate work I looked for ways to give back to the community. Being good in math, I volunteered to teach adults how to earn their GED and also teach troubled kids to pass their math state test and graduate high school.
From the satisfaction of helping people improve their math, I went back to college to earn a Master of Education (MEd) so I can learn advanced methods of how to help others learn.
As a classroom math teacher, I had the best performing Algebra class in the district every year.
After the pandemic, I left public education and focused on tutoring adults to pass the IBEW Aptitude Test.
